** CHANGES
Yes, that feature we've all been waiting for:
If you drag a FOLDER over Autograph, it picks a random file in that
folder to be your signature. Be careful. Make sure all your files in that
folder are acceptable signature files.
** WARNING
Autograph only works with Eudora. If you don't have Eudora, give up. If you
don't know what Eudora is, give up. You also need System 7.
** WHAT IT DOES
Not much. It changes your signature in Eudora. You can drag and drop a
text file onto Autograph and it'll change your Eudora signature to that.
If you tell it to make a TEXT file into a signature, the next time you
double-click on the file, the signature in Eudora will be changed to it.
The idea is to have a folder of signatures, any which one can be
double-clicked on to change your signature. Drag the whole folder over
Autograph if you want Autograph to pick a random one. Oh yeah, if Eudora
happens to be running when you double-click one of the signatures, it'll
switch back to Eudora.

Subject: [*] binary-pump101.hqx
Ever download a file, only to have it appear as a generic binary file?
If you transfer files with unix, IBM, or VAX systems frequently you've
probably experienced this once or twice. Normally, the solution is to
figure out the correct file type, and then use Resedit or some other
utility and manually change the file type and creator.
Binary Pump is a program which looks at file tags or name extensions in order
to convert them to the correct mac file type and creator. This program is very
easy and very quick to use--simply drag and drop and it's so fast you might
wonder if it ran at all! Binary Pump will also work for non-Drag and Drop
System 6.0.7 users.
Binary Pump is also very easy to customize and has several features which
allow the user to extract file tag information.
version 1.01
Fixes a couple probs with System 6.0.7 and a couple other minor bugs.

Subject: [*] Cyclone 1.1
High Risk Ventures is proud to present our first shareware game! Cyclone
features way-cool graphics and sound, and addicting and challenging game
play. It's based on an old arcade game called Star Castle, in which you
fly a spaceship around on a wrap-around screen, and attack an enemy base
which sits in the middle of screen. The base protects itself with three
rotating shield rings, heat-seeking mines, and a nasty plasma cannon.
We've added a few things to the original game, including weapons for your
ship, shields, bonus points, a challenge level, and more. There's also
an 'original game' mode for those who want to play the game as it was
originally designed.
This is a commercial-quality game, offered as shareware with a $10
registration fee. Call High Risk Ventures at (800) 927-0771 or email to
highrisk@aol.com for more information.
Version 1.1 fixes a few bugs, including the infamous multiple-monitor
mouse problems. It also makes the ship more agile, keeps the mines from
crossing the screen boundaries too often, and includes several other bug
fixes and refinements.
Enjoy!

GANTTaid (for Excel 4.0/Mac)
1993 (c) Stephen R. White, All Rights Reserved
version 1.0 - Shareware
GANTTaid is a set of utilities primarily designed to assist in
the creation of Gantt charts within Excel 4.0/Mac. Not intended
for those who need full-featured project management capabilities,
GANTTaid constructs horizontal time-lines with the following
user-selectable smallest units: quarter, month, week, day.
AM/PM, 15-minutes. It also will construct a vertical calendar
with 15-minutes as the smallest unit.
Commands are provided for creating a variety of task bars
indicating planned and actual tasks, and several commands aid in
resizing task bars. For further manipulation of GANTTaid's, and
other Excel-drawn objects, the user may wish to consider DRAWaid,
also shareware.
Immediately after loading GANTTaid, the user should go through its
Tutorial and read GANTTaid's documentation (on the menubar,
"Tutorial" and "Dump docs," repectively).
Remittance and acceptance of the shareware registration fee will
result in the shareware password being forwarded to the user, who
can then further empower his/her copy of GANTTaid.
This file must be translated from Binhex and then unstuffed
(Stuffit 1.5.1 or better).

Subject: [*] F/A-18 1.0 to 1.1 updater
This is the patch from Graphic Simulations to update the game "F/A-18
Hornet" from version 1.0 to 1.1. It fixes MANY bugs, adds much more
detailed scenery (the airports and aircraft carrier in particular look a
lot better), introduces a better flight model, and generally makes F/A-18
feel like a completely different (and much better) game!
Note that this is only "1.1fc", the "final candidate". Some bugs remain to
be fixed before the final release, which will be mailed to all registered
customers in a few weeks. (And yes, currently it takes up to two months or
more for them to reply to your registration and send out the unlock code --
they're swamped.) One of the more interesting bugs is that in the "Air to
Air" training mission, when you start the mission on your carrier, you'll
see another F/A-18 in front of you -- balanced on its nose. It falls over
and sits there blocking the runway; destroy it with your cannon to blow it
out of the way so you can take off.
This patch contains four files: the patch to upgrade F/A-18 Hornet from 1.0
to 1.1 (if you have the 1.0.1 patch from AOL, then reinstall the game from
your 1.0 disks), a new "F/A-18 Data 1.1" file (remove your old "F/A-18
Data"), a readme explaining how to apply the patches, and a readme listing
the myriad changes in 1.1.
Have fun, and happy flying!

The following HyperCard stack is GEnie's gift to computer users.
Basically, it is a multi-media stack explaining the different areas

It has a good mixture of sound (three .mod files), custom buttons,
and colored cards. This is an excellent stack for HyperCard
programming students who desire to colorize their stacks
and use custom buttons. The scripts are unprotected and
can be examined.
Requires a minimum of 68020 processor; System 6.0.7 or higher;
4-bit color monitor with at least 640x400 resolution (works on
PowerBooks); HyperCard 2.0 or the HyperCard Player 2.1 or greater;
3mb RAM allocated to HyperCard (you can use 2 to 2.5mb RAM but the
MODs will not play.)

This year is the 100th birthday (Dec. 26) of Mao Zedong (1893-1976),
the past leader of China. Whether he is loved, respected or hated,
one thing is for sure: he is a talented and excellent poet --
especially his great skill in classic Chinese poetry form.
The following HyperCard stack is the a collection of his published
poems in Chinese. At the end is the English translation (I have

This archive contains everything you need to try out the Mark/Space ZMODEM
Tool:

The Mark/Space ZMODEM Tool is...
...fast
Mark/Space has created a communications toolbox file transfer tool that
implements the popular, robust, and efficient ZMODEM file transfer
protocol.
...compatible
As a Communications Toolbox file transfer tool, Mark/Space brings ZMODEM to
such third party applications as VersaTerm, MacTerminal, Termy, and the
communications portions of ClarisWorks, GreatWorks, and many more. Once
installed, the ZMODEM file transfer protocol becomes available to every
application that supports communications toolbox file transfer tools.
...powerful
The tool supports auto-receive, for reception of files without user
intervention, as well as auto-resume. If a file transfer is aborted for any
reason, the transfer can be resumed at the point at which it left off -
resulting in a substantial savings in time and connect charges. Transfers
can also take place over connections that interpret control characters -
such as telnet connections, or serial connections using software flow
control. Multiple files can be sent or received in a single batch for even
greater efficiency.
...flexible
The tool features both a brief status window, in which basic information
about the transfer is displayed, and a detailed status window in which many
more details are displayed. At all times the speed of the transfer and the
estimated time remaining is shown. Balloon help is available in the
configuration dialog - as well as the status window - to explain settings
as well as status information.
If you do not already have a terminal program that supports file transfer
tools, you might want to download the demo version of our general purpose
application - Communicate Lite.
The demo version supports downloading, but not uploading. There are no other
restrictions. Enjoy!

subject: -43 bug fix release of LinksWare. 12/29/93
This is version 3.0.2 of LinksWare, the hypermedia program that
uses your own files. LinksWare allows the user to open standard
Mac files (text, word-processor, sound, graphic, movie and
scripts) and establish a link from a word, phrase or area of a
graphic to another file, or another location in the same file.
Does not alter the files in any way. Three stars from MacWeek
and MacUser (Aug, 93). This demo is convertible to a full
working version with a phone call.
Version 3.0.2 fixes a problem with a -43 error if the program
was nested too deeply in folders.

Version 1.1 of Nstack has been completed. It fixes a stupid bug that would
have prevented any future updates from installing properly. It also fixes
a few minor typos in the organizations listing, and makes reference to the
new publisher of Nstack, Trashbox Design (a recording, publishing, and

Version 1.1 contains no new listings, but you will need version 1.1 to use

OtherMenu is a really great utility. Unfortunately I haven't seen anyone
release any externals for it though and think that is a shame. It makes
a certain sense though because releasing them is sort of messy. They are
small and hard to catalog. What I propose then is to simplify the distribution
of them by making a centralized package of OtherMenu externals available. I
have included a couple of externals of my own. Others should feel
free to add to this package. Just include a folder with your external and a
brief readme and then re-upload this package (after incrementing the version
number of course). That way all the available third party externals can be
found in one place. This will help both the end user, external writers and
the kind folks at mac.archive and sumex-aim.

Symbionts is an extension that monitors the startup process. Symbionts
displays the name and number of bytes of memory each system extension
allocates from the system heap. The name and number appear beneath the
extension's icon, and since the name is usually truncated, Symbionts also
displays it in the menu bar. Symbionts even shows the icons for those
extensions that don't normally reveal themselves.
Symbionts Control is a control panel that sets the preferences for the
Symbionts extension. It also allows the review of the information collected
by the Symbionts extension. Additionally, the control panel is used to
manage the loading of system extensions without having to dig around in the
System folder. Extensions can be enabled and disabled simply by
double-clicking on the extension icon and name.
Version 2.3.2 corrects the following problems.
- Fixed incompatibility with Suitcase 2.1.4 (and other extensions which keep
their resource forks open).
- Better support for At Ease and other Finder substitutes.
- Extension not sensing System 7.1 correctly and, therefore, not setting its
extension type such that all extensions were begin monitored.
- Fixed problems introduced with Symantec C++ 6.0.1.
- Better size determination for debuggers.
- Fixed visual problems (reduced size of dialog, fixed icon highlighting, and
jumping text).

Subject: [*] Zipple 1.9 - control panel/extension
This is version 1.9 of Zipple. Please replace any earlier
versions you have with this version.
Zipple is a control panel and extension for System 7 which
allows you to replace the titles of your Apple, Balloon Help,
Keyboard (if you have one), and Application menus with animated
images, in color if you have a color screen. The displayed image
can depend on the frontmost application or desk accessory, if
you like. You can use the ready-made images that come with
Zipple, or create your own with the sophisticated editor in the
control panel.
Even if you have used Zipple before, it is -important- that you
read the manual, at least the part about installing and upgrading.
New in version 1.9:
* Now uses a preferences file.
* Can now choose Zipples for desk accessories as well as apps.
* Can now rename previously created Zipples.
* Flip horizontal and flip vertical tools added to frame editor.
* The color paint bucket now uses the current pattern in the
currently selected color.
* Color and pattern are now handled by popup menus, rather than
a static palette.
* Now automatically detects where your menus are, rather than
requiring you to tell it in a dialog box.
* In addition, Zipple now detects when the menus it's meant to be
replacing are actually on the screen, and only draws when they
are present.
* No longer crashes when you change the depth of your screen.
* The grabber can now grab all of the icons contained in a SICN
resource, not just the first one. The grabber can also grab
frames from Zipples.
* No longer causes strange "squashed" icons to appear in popup
menus in StuffIt or Compact Pro (or any other app ;)
This is a StuffIt 3.0 archive.

Only trouble is it's *not* shareware (no price given) and the vendors do

(no background printing/slow...etc) We load both version of the Deskwriter

Why is it that TN3270 will not work with the newer versions of the Deskwriter

This is in response to Fabrizio's posting on the digest.
I have a 660AV, and I tried the same patch on HD/SC setup 7.2.2 to
format/initialize my Quantum LPS240 drive. HD/SC Setup sees it
but I also get an error message that "Initialization failed because
it could write to the disk" (something like this). What does this mean?
Does this happen only on the AV macs?

Johan,
I have been using Label Manager 3.0. Although not equipped with all the
bells and whistles, it does fine for me, and it's shareware! I paid about
$20 a year or two ago. You'll probably find it on the sumex-aim or umich
archives. You can also write to:
Andrew Welch, Mark 3 Software, 29 Grey Rock Road, Wilton CT 06897
and ask him for it. When you pa`y the fee he sends you a diskette with lots
of stuff.

I have always used Hypercard (File menu, Print Reports) to print labels.
Works great and I can customize it to print whatever size label and

Someone asked about other users of the LineLink 144e modem, and
particularly what initialization strings they were using to take advantage
of the data compression feature.
I've been using the LineLink 144e for a couple of weeks now with no
problem. At less than $100, it seemed too good to pass up. I'm able to
connect to my mainframe at 19200, which must mean the data compression is
being automatically invoked. (I haven't done any actual benchmarks to
PROVE it's working at 19200, but the important point for me is that it's
WORKING.) I've been able to do simple asynchronous connections and also
run MacSlip, NewsWatcher, and Fetch without incident.
I have no initialization strings other than ATM0~M to get the modem to
shut up. There's no external volume control.
Based on my experience, I'd recommend the modem. It's not exactly a sturdy
box -- if you dropped a trade paperback on it, the plastic case would
probably cease to exist. But it performs the basic functions well. I
figure by the time it falls off my desk and shatters, I'll have saved
enough money to buy a sturdier one.

Lets see if I can remember. When you bought the Lisa it came with seven

Of course the Mac doesn't have pre-emptive multitasking, but I download all
the time with my term program while running all my inits and all but one
of my applications. I use Reflection 2+ (ver 3.6.2) from Walker, Richer,
and Quinn to emulate a vt320. The only program I have that causes any
problems with Reflection is SoftPC Pro version 3.1. I don't use that
program very much so I don't have much of a problem with cooperative
multitasking vis-a-vis downloading, or my term program. Usually I'm
running at least 4 or 5 different programs while reflection is doing it's
thing--sometimes two or three times that many. I up/down load all the time
over a serial connection at work at 19,200 baud and the only thing I have
to watch out for is SoftPC. Wouldn't you know it'd be a peecee thing that
causes the problem? ;-) (I'm talking here about good comercial and
shareware apps here--obviously you might have problems playing some
games, etc... while downloading with any program.)
I'd suggest trying another term program before anyone jumps to the
conclusion that you can't effectively multitask with the current
cooperative multitasking scheme. We'd all like to see "real multitasking"
on the Mac, but even multifinder worked fairly well. In fact, I remember
thinking that beyond the application menu, system 7 really didn't add
much to multifinder's multitasking abilities. If Apple does come out with
a preemptive system (there are rumors about this) I will stick with the
current system unless they can do it without breaking any of my apps.
It sounds like zmodem, microphone, some old modem cables, or maybe some
setup files is the problem. I'd think you would have little trouble with
versaterm, reflection, or probably the new Sitcom program (or even Kermit).
PS. On a related note, Reflection works very well with our IBM mainframe
too, since the MF supports vt terminals. Proprietary download protocols work
only on the vax as far as I know (no host app on the ibm?) but transfers
go considerably faster than zmodem, much faster than Kermit, and are very
easy to perform.)

I just tested this, because I couldn't believe it. Comes up selected in both

Subject: Newton OS 1.1.1
My wife's Christmas gift was a Newton MessagePad complete with the
Connection Kit. The first thing I was told to do was to upgrade the
Newton OS to version 1.0.4. I made several attempts to do that, all
unsucessful. Strangely, I noticed that the Newton claimed that it's
system version was not 1.0.2, or 1.0.4, but 1.1.1. Very strange.
What is 1.1.1?
I learned that my Newton will not accept an upgrade to the "newer" version
1.0.4 because version 1.1.1 is functionally equivalent. (1.1.1 apparently
indicates that 1.0.4 is burned into the Newton ROMs. At least now I
know that MacZone sent me a new unit! :-)
I called 1-800-SOS-APPL this morning and suggested that the Newton
(or the Mac) should give some indication that upgrading isn't necessary.
(Instead, the Mac says that the upload was successful while the Newton
simply says, "Waiting for response."--not very user friendly.) Doug,
on the Apple Assistance Line, said that there have been a number of
complaints about this but he isn't sure that Apple plans to do anything
about it. (Translation: Apple does not intend to do anything.)
It's reassuring to see Apple's consistency. They won't fix the bad
mice on the Mac, the busted screens on the PowerBook or the sound cutoff
problem on the IIsi. Now Apple carries this tradition to the Newton! :-(

Do I understand from the last infomac post that Nisus with the full worldscript

hardware protected, what is it; that dingus that hangs out of a serial port?
I've seen that advertised for years, but never actually heard (until now?) of
any major app that uses it. This won't last beyond the point that all the other
competitors get full worldscript going, and you can bet that most users will
wait rather than live with this mess. I've used a Mac since 1984, and *every*
time something like this has been attempted, the product has failed in the
marketplace, usually being overrun by other products from competing companies
that have more sensible policies.
Passions may run strong on this issue, so folks, let's keep the discussion
civil!

Jay Handel wrote on 27 Dec that he was interested in obtaining the
Oxford English Dictionary (OED) on CD-ROM for the Mac. I purchased the
OED several months ago for the list price of 495 English pounds plus
sales tax from Heffers in Cambridge, England. Their vitals are:

Fax: 44-223-410-464
Tel: 44-223-358-351
and they are VERY good.
It is a wonder of our modern age that the entire OED is on one CD-ROM
and access is FAST. To give you an idea of what this means I noted a
question several weeks ago about how to describe Info-Mac dialogs on mac
software and related topics. In short, how to describe Internet
Discourse. Some wag replied that "intercourse" would be appropriate.
Here is part of what the OED has to say about the verb "intercourse":
1. Communication to and fro between countries, etc.; mutual dealings
between the inhabitants of different localities. In early use
exclusively with reference to trade, and hence sometimes = commerce,
traffic; now in more general sense.
2. Social communication between individuals; frequent and habitual
contact in conversation and action; dealings.
3. Communion between man and that which is spiritual or unseen.
4. Continuous interchange or exchange of (letters, etc.).
Not a bad description of Info-Mac, right?
Further, several weeks ago someone asked about fonts for ancient
(antique?) Greek. The installation of the OED requires the installation
of several unusual fonts including one called "Porson Greek OUP". I
suspect that this is the desired ancient Greek font.
I do not know if the font can be purchased separately from the OED. I
suggest contacting:

Unfortunately, even though there are no inits (a selling point made clear on

there still is garbage left behind on occasions when dialog boxes disappear.

that it
can not export to any file format, much like the Control Panel Wallpaper. But,

Stuffit Lite (latest version is 3.0.7) is still shareware & should be available

Subject: TextEdit instability on LC475
A very Happy New Year to all from sultry Singapore! Yes here I am, back
an absence of 5 years, and...I must say I'm not particularly happy to be
back at all. But that's life. At least I am starting work soon, and may be
able to get back on the net via some local address rather than telneting to
Bristol when I happen to be at the National University of Singapore or
(shudder) modeming to the UK, which I have done several times at my own
expense...
Anyway, rather than bore you with sad tales about life here or the
immaturity of the computer trade (I know your LCs and hard disks may well
have been assembled at factories here, but that doesn't mean our marketplace
understands Macs or any other type of computer very well!), I need to put
a question to the collective wisdom of the net. I am having problems with
TextEdit-based programs on my new LC475. I have US system software, with
Arabic as a secondary script. I find that a number of operations will cause
the Finder to crash and restart in an endless loop, after which the only
thing I can do is reboot the machine. These operations include:
(1) Using the Text control panel.
(2) Typing in Arabic (but English works fine) in a TextEdit-based
application. Problems don't arise with the same applications on the other
Macs I've used.
(3) Pasting English text from (say) ClarisWorks into a text editor.
If I try to use the Arabic-specific control panels I can get a similar crash,
or (even more inexplicably) a 'coprocessor not installed' error message. I
even get these problems if I boot the Mac off the Arabic Disk Tools floppy
(with the appropriate System Enabler added of course).
Any ideas what could be going wrong? Is there a known conflict between the
LC475 software and WorldScript? Kindly e-mail me directly as for the time
being it will just be too difficult (not to mention expensive) for me to read
or contribute to any usenet news at all. Thanks - I've missed the net a lot
while bouncing around the Eastern Mediterranean, and it's good to be back...
